I read an interesting article about that song. It was written for Judy Garland's character in "Meet Me in St. Louis," and it was originally very dark. Kind of an "..eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die" thing. If you know the plot of the movie, you'll get that. They kept having to go back to Ralph Blane to say, "Er, could you lighten this up a bit?"
I had a friend that said she'd seen somewhere that they told Judy her dog died to get her to cry in that scene. I don't know if that's true or not, but she did seem really upset in the movie.
I knew there was a reason I didn't watch this... because now I am sitting here in a too-quiet house bawling my stupid heart out like a complete and total fool.
First.
