I wish I knew what it was. Via //Static
I like Jake's explanation best:
It's clearly a picture of a Houyhnhnm 'cowboy' (for lack of a better word) mounted on his trusty Yahoo steed...Probably rounding up those wild Yahoos seen in the background.

I'm just taking a stab in the dark. However, in WW1 and WW2 the mountain divisions would use mules to carry in thier smaller howitzers in areas where jeeps couldn't drive. If you have a mule that gave birth or was injured I could see where the troops might carry it to bring it along.
As I said, a total guess.

Perfect, Jake.

That's a donkey - not a mule. Donkeys, being smaller than mules, were not used for military transport. I have no alternate explanation but don't think your guess is right.

I am so using that picture...
When I was an enlisted infantryman we used to call ourselves the "packmules of the Army". I think that guy earned the title, however.

On a more serious note - if I had to take a guess, I'd say that is from French North Africa. Just my guess from the helmets, terrain and the dude off to the left on the photo - I'd say Algeria, near the Atlas Mountains?

Well the French Connection might explain it..
Posted by: Jake | September 12, 2008 at 01:26 PM
The enemy probably yelled
"Elevez votre mains!" (raise your hands!)
but the French soldier heard
"Elevez votre ane!" (raise your ass!)
.. and there you go.. You notice the others arent waiving asses, though.
