hmph. Pews, as everyone ought to know, are a bizzare early modern invention.
medieval churches had rushes on the floor and you could wander around- sit, kneel, pray, wander off into side niches, knit, gossip (which was a sin, but still), come in just in the for the sacrement- during the whole service.


Now the presider lectures you if you don't stay for the (usually Protestant) hymm at the end. It always cracks me up to sing A Mighty Fortress Is Our God after mass...
