Gail? Why is friend spelled friend and not frend? And the ie in there isn't a dipthong is it? I'm trying to explain this to Oak. Do some pronounce it frind?

It used to be a diphthong, Ana. In Old English, it was freond, pronounced, FRAY-und, much as it is in many parts of the South today.
