I'm just taking a stab in the dark. However, in WW1 and WW2 the mountain divisions would use mules to carry in thier smaller howitzers in areas where jeeps couldn't drive. If you have a mule that gave birth or was injured I could see where the troops might carry it to bring it along.

That's a donkey - not a mule. Donkeys, being smaller than mules, were not used for military transport. I have no alternate explanation but don't think your guess is right.

I am so using that picture...
When I was an enlisted infantryman we used to call ourselves the "packmules of the Army". I think that guy earned the title, however.
