Ironically, H2S is a formation gas that has to be considered when drilling in some areas. The state drilling regulatory agencies will make extra safety requirements on drilling operation to make sure that any H2S encountered is safely dealt with.

Free hydrogen sulfide in the blood reduces its oxygen-carrying capacity, thereby depressing the nervous system.

H2S Odors become detectable in concentrations as low as .008 parts per million (ppm) but over .1 PPM you lose the ability to smell it. That's why drillers say "If you smell it, run or you're already dead." Then they normally fart near the new guy.
